The Chieftain Public House - History

1871 map showing The Chieftain Hotel

From 1871 to 1933
Morecambe was a small but
busy harbour town housing the
infamous ship breakers yard, at the
Stone Jetty. Breaking down ships was a large part of Morecambe's income, as well as the local fishermen including the Mussel and Cockle industries. Central to all this commerce was The Chieftain Hotel, A locals favourite and and a travelers sanctuary.

Still today the pub is a locals favourite.

Chieftain bust is still proudly displayed today.

Originally built in 1850 as a Coaching hotel, The Chieftain has been extended many times, As Morecambe grew, so did the hotel side by side to accommodate the increase in local industries, to the present day. This fascinating story tells of changing times, around a well known Morecambe Character, The Chieftain.

Morecambe History

From its early days, Morecambe (Poulton le Sands) became the Victorian seaside resort of Morecambe, with its spectacular Bay (the second largest in the country) and glorious views of the Lake District is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Lancashire. With the appearance of guest houses and hotels there was no holding back. Morecambe has grown into one of the most beautiful and popular holiday resorts in the North West.

As Morecambe grew into a successful holiday destination to many of Lancashire's Rich and Poor families alike the seaside town expanded around the still successful Chieftain Public House. From a local fisherman's haunt, it developed into a much loved central drinking establishment for locals and now the new found tourism industry.

A new era begins

Previous Landlords and Lady's

1901 - Mr Walmersloy
1934 - Mr Daniels

1946 - Mr Wilson (same family)

1981 - Managed House
1984 - Bernard and Linda Shaw

..........to present day

The Chieftain now came into the hands of one Wilson family, who then ran the pub successfully over 2 generations, and for 50years.

As the war past by, and seaside tourism exploded in the 1950 and 60's, Morecambe's fortune's enabled it to compete with others like Southport and even Blackpool. With Morecambe's breathtaking views over the Cumbrian hills and Mountains, we had that jewel in the crown for Lancashire's seaside towns.

With the town successful, so was the trade at it's favourite drinking establishment. With the license still being run by the same family 2 generations, it later was taken over by Linda and Bernard Shaw in 1984.

With a real determination to keep the pub, traditional in character but improve on its service and entertainment, Bernard and Linda developed the pub to the current day, creating a beautiful and noticeable landmark within the central area of the town. Proud of it's history and heritage, the pub now boasts the most varying entertainment in the town, while, it is still loved by the locals and the visitors to the town.

One of the key original features of this pub is the famous oval bar, with it's quaint window effect openings. This window into the past is at the heart of the pub, and still today, amazes new visitors as very few pubs have this feature in the UK.

Today in Morecambe

The Shaw family are still running the pub today, and made it one of the most popular pubs in Morecambe. While other pubs are having their heritage ripped out, Morecambe's Chieftain has embraced its heritage and even today conversation is heard about the towns past, and certainly the towns future.

A mixing pot of traditional and new, the pub has a well deserved place in Morecambe's heart, not only in location, but in the local people.
