The Chieftain sponsored the Morecambe Super League team when they won the Premier Division Championship in 1989-90. Playing for the Morecambe team around that period were Ronnie Baxter, Chico McQueen, Ronnie Peel, Andy Gudgeon, Fred Carter who was the Lancashire captain who took the team through 4 of their 9 County Championships. Around that time Reg Cupit, Alan Warriner, Paul Beard and Alan Glazier are just a few of the games famous names who played Super League darts at the Chieftain.

The pub team itself have won many local titles, amongst them; eleven 1st division Tuesday Night Winter Championships and ten Tuesday Night Summer League awards, not to mention several double and treble trophies over the years. The pubs Ladies team has been playing for over 25 years and although the team do not get amongst the seasonal awards the majority of the team have been together for all of those 25 years, a great testament to the team spirit and friendship of the team.

To help the local County players with their expenses while travelling to various Counties up and down the Country, The Chieftain currently sponsors Mick O’Hara & Dave Shackleton both of whom play for the Chieftain and are in the Lancashire County Squad. The Chieftain also sponsored Paul Beard & Alan Warriner when they were in the Lancashire Squad, the Lancashire County Secretary Bruce Boniface is regular in the Chieftain and he also is sponsored by the pub while supporting the Chieftain players at various events such as the I.O.M. Open and the Welsh Open.

Recently the Chieftain reached the final 64 four times from over 700 Boddingtons outlets to play off at Manchester, again the Chieftain paid for transport to the venue, where the team won their way through 2 rounds to reach the last 16.

When you are in Morecambe you can’t miss visiting the Chieftain, and if it is on a Tuesday Night through the summer you may even get a game for the best darts team in the Borough.
