The
Best ever darts player Phil Taylor stood in for Eric Bristow who
had double booked when he should
have played a tribute match for
the world famous Alan Glazier and Mike Gregory who was regular
in the Chieftain before moving to live in Rochdale, the Bruise
Brothers, Paul Whitworth & Mark Holden were a popular twosome
on the dart board at the pub, Dave Shackleton and Mick O'Hara
played all comers for 8 hours to raise funds for the Jennifer
Wilson appeal, a cheque for £3,500 was donated on a night
at the pub to Chnsties Heart & Lung Hospital at Manchester.
The Chieftain sponsored the Morecambe Super League team when they won the Premier
Division Championship in 1989-90 playing for the Morecambe team
around that period were Ronnie Baxter, Chico McQueen, Ronnie Peel,
Andy Gudgeon, Fred Carter, the Lancashire captain who took the
team through 4 of their 9 County Championships, Reg Cupit, Alan
Warriner, Paul Beard and Alan Glazier are just a few of the games
famous names who played Super League darts at the Chieftain.
The pub team itself have won many local titles amongst them 11, 1st division Tuesday
Night Winter Championships and 10 Tuesday Night Summer League awards
not to mention several double & treble trophies over the years,
the pub has also had a Ladies team for over 25 years and although
the team do not get amongst the seasonal awards the majority of the
team have ironically been together for all of those 25 years which
is a credit to them.
To help the local
County players with their expenses while travelling to various
Counties up and down the Country, the Chieftain currently
sponsors Mick O'Hara & Dave Shackleton both of whom play
for the Chieftain and are in the Lancashire County Squad,
the Chieftain also sponsored Paul Beard & Alan Warriner
when they were in the Lancashire Squad, the Lancashire County
Secretary Bruce Boniface is regular in the Chieftain and he
also is sponsored by the pub while supporting the Chieftain
players at various events such as the I.O.M. Open and the
Welsh Open.
Recently the Chieftain reached
the final 64 from over 700 Boddingtons outlets to play off
at Manchester, again the Chieftain paid for transport to the
venue, where the team won their way through 2 rounds to reach
the last 16. When you are in Morecambe you can't miss visiting
the Chieftain, and if it is on a Tuesday Night through the
Summer you may even get a game for the best darts team in
the Borough
Bruce Boniface - 30 years as a Lancashire County Official
In 1977 I attended a meeting at Manchester as the Morecambe Super League Delegate.
It was on that occasion
that Mr Les France resigned his position as the Lancashire
County Secretary to form the now famous Les Col Promotions Company and I was voted
on as an Executive County Committee Member, for five years I took up the position as
the Lancashire Super League Secretary, and then when Mr Taff Meredith the then County
Secretary sadly passed away I was asked to take on the mantly as the Lancashire County
Secretary, a job which I have held for 25 years.
During my time as a Lancashire County Official the Red Rose County have won the British
Counties Championship on 12 occasions & the Men's 'A' Premiership Title for a record
nine times, in 1986 my wife Margaret joined my on the committee as the Lancashire treasurer
along with organising the accommodation and travel arrangements.
Between us we have negotiated that the Lancashire County home fixtures be played in Morecambe
by encouraging local club owners to supply us with the amount of sponsorship money to cover costs
for a season's requirements. The Bowl (now a bingo hall), the New Central Pier (since burnt down), Ocean
Edge caravan park, the Ranch House (on Frontierland), and our present venue the Carleton where we
have been for the past 10 years will, I would like to think all have benefitted along with pubs,
clubs, hotels, boarding houses and eating establishments through darts being played at Morecambe.
One of my proudest moments over the 30 years I have been involved in the Lancashire Darts Organisation
was when as Captain of the Morecambe Super League team we won the Premiership title in the 1988/89 season
while playing our home fixtures at the Chieftain, when you consider how big Morecambe is against towns
like Manchester, Bolton, St Helens, Oldham, and even Lancaster winning a championship with all the best teams
in Lancashire involved is quite an achievement.
A lot has happened during my 30 years as a County Official and to mention half of the stories I could tell
would take more space than you could imagine, but to sum up I can honestly say I have made more friends
than enemies and I would like to think I have done some good for the game that has taken over a big part
of my life. I am proud that the Lancashire versus England game being staged at the Carleton on Whit
Saturday is in recognition of my 30 years service to Lancashire Darts. I am celebrating my 75th
birthday at the Chieftain on Wednesday teh 27th of June and you are very welcome to join us
on what will surely be a great night.
Bruce Boniface
